Big Room
Around the age of 24 months children will move up from the Baby-room to the big room. We also have children joining us at two or three years old for the first time and they will also be joining the Big room. The children stay in this ‘room’ until they start school. In the big room there are both opportunities to play with toys at tables or on open floor spaces. Our continuous provision which is available to the children at all times includes; a permanent tuff tray for messy play , a mark making and craft table, painting easels, a vehicle station including trains, cars, emergency vehicles, various tracks and ramps, dressing up, roleplay kitchen, book corner, small world, puzzles, various construction toys, outside we have mud kitchen, shop, bikes, wheelbarrows, big construction, diggers and mud, prams, minibeast hunting, climbing frames, slides, water wall, and resources for building obstacle courses.
For most of the day the children explore and play following their own interests and staff play alongside them scaffolding and encouraging them and helping them to share and take turns with their friends. The children share their time between the outside and inside environment.
For part of the day the children will do group activities often linked to a topic and their next steps in learning, these are age appropriate, short, fun and engaging and the children really enjoy them. Typically, they may do three group activities one playing musical instruments singing and dancing, another doing a fine motor activity such as cutting and sticking, peg boards or threading, the third might be more language based or maths based, eg finding coins buried in the sand and counting them, or using story sacks.
